Today I’m bringing you the news that the global promoter Live Nation announced via a memo to live agents that they would be reducing fees (alongside other stipulations) paid to artists by 20%, with an aim to also renegotiate thousands of shows that are postponed to 2021.
Everyone has been hit this year, but it seems that musicians will be taking the brunt of it with this one, and I’m not worried about massive artists like the Foo Fighters, they’ll be just fine! I’m worried about how this looks for up and coming artists like yourselves, where income from festivals helps you stay afloat and enables you to grow.
NOTE: Since recording this video, Live Nation has spoken to a publication and said they are the artist friendly company, and in retrospect, the 20% factor shouldn’t have been there. We’ll see what comes of this, as in the video I go through the other factors detailed that indicate a substancial shift in risk.

Whilst I'm certainly not going to argue with the points raised here Live Nation are supporting the industry in ways others are not! Musicians are not the only ones losing out with CV19, managers, agents, engineers, backline tech, tour managers, riggers, stage hands, drivers, merch sellers, venue/bar staff etc are all feeling the pinch. ive made a living off of touring for 11 years – and most of these "changes" have been standard practice for my entire career. artist always covers all flight costs in advance out of their own pocket. if its a club gig – the hotel and ground is usually covered. if its a festival the artist pays the hotel and ground transpo cost. then when my agency sends me my statement and payment – sometimes there will be an insurance fee that was taken off the top for a festival. none of this is much different than the norm. not in in the music world where i exist. and ive played for live nation before. and they PAY INSANELY HIGH FEES. i feel like I won the lottery when i get booked by them lol. most of the highest fees I have ever made thorough my entire career have been from Live Nation. a 20% cut —- would still be higher paying than almost every other gig that i have played. thats my personal experience. and for all the other DJ peers in my scene.
This effects me 0%. If the industry and stupid artists had not been so greedy for fame and $$$, this never would have happened. It has been headed this way for years. I make a good living from music. I have never belonged to ASCAP, Unions, or any of that nonsense. Why? Because I'm not a greedy fool.
What are AEG doing?
If this is what's really gonna happen, then I'm gonna miss watching live shows from around the world. I'm gonna miss watching international performers from another country performing on stage and killing it. A great part of the industry will fade away forever……

I'm 60 this year. I've seen hundreds of concerts throughout the western United States. Damian makes a clear point, but switching things back to last year's system will do nothing. It was shit then too. You see more shows standing with tens of thousands of others with NO view of the stage. You pay more for a skinnier seat. Half the time the premium seat availability is contingent upon buying a lousy meal,……. I even think the rigged system has made those premium artists lazier, and more likely to side with the people who have control over to tours, the venues, the tickets, the scalping. (Heard the last TOOL album?) They'll support a multi-year tour with a garage quality jamb session. Well, I for one have decided to vote with my feet. It's always been a tough business, but I will not have the middle finger wagged in my face.
1. I will only support bands at independent venues. 2. When venues came looking for a bailout from congress, I made sure they knew that AEG and Live Nation were not a part of my support. 3. I will not, ever again, buy a ticket through Stubhub. They may be able to get more money for that ticket, but the artist and the taxpayers want you to see that show at a certain price point. It fortifies our culture. 4. I WILL direct at least a third of my concert budget toward new artists and unique musical styles. 5. Not only do I pay for all of my music, I enjoy the artwork that comes with it. I will not use a music service.
The answers are out there, but music lovers and artists have to stick together for the common good. I'm sure thousands of superb musicians throw in the towel while we support (at huge expense) bands packaged for us by corporations. Fuck um! The Industry of Cool is here people. Wake up. Like I tell my sixth graders, people don't visit this country to see our math. They come here to go to Disneyland.

I work for a live event production company and nowadays it’s virtually impossible to get decent music without paying unheard of prices. Bands and promoters have had the upper hand in this industry for years. It’s supply and demand, so good for them. Now they need us and want us to be able to pay the same prices as before. We’ve been out of work since March also. Unlike the musicians, we have venues and huge overhead expenses to maintain throughout this closure. We can’t just swallow our pride and get a fast food job to pay the bills. We have to keep these venues and companies and employees floating until this things over. That means going into debt just to keep our people and bills paid. When we book national acts, we pay a set price to the agent/band. Then, on top of that, we still have to pay for the lights, sound, stagehands, security, travel, hotel, and any other expenses that come along with the performance. When a band charges $100k for a show, they still only pay the bus driver $15/hr. The stage hands still make $12/hr. Nobody but the band is getting rich. If they return next year and agree to play for lower fees, it will restart an entire industry financially. The actual performers have the power to make this decision. It’s my hope that live music will return with the focus being on the guest instead of the performers wallet. I hope artists start playing small clubs and independent venues more.

As much as I hate Travis Scott for putting money above lives, this explains why he wouldn't stop the show! Then again, it seems like it wouldn't have been a financial risk to him to stop the show because, as evidenced by the large amount of people there, he could've afforded it.

You should make a new video on LN since the Astroworld tragedy. Knowing all of this info really pisses me off considering what happened. They are way too fucking greedy but obviously don't give a shit about the attendees. Maximum profits, minimum safety. I can't stop thinking about what happened.
It infuriates me that that artists aren't cancelling their shows. Probably because of this fucked up contract. I hope more and more artists cancel them after this.
