I show you a few pieces of gear that I own, tell you why I would buy it again, and then show you the inexpensive alternative. This is a really important video for people that still want good gear but don’t want to spend the money on really high end expensive backpacking gear. Cheap gear and inexpensive gear as alternatives to the gear I’d always buy over and over again is what this is about.

Lanshan II is double wall. I LOVE mine!

  2. Of course, there is cheap equipment that is still really good. I have now really taken a lot of money in hand the last two years and completely replaced my equipment. Everything that has rank and name is now in a backpack that was constructed exclusively for the use of the special troops. The complete equipment costs more than a four-week five-star vacation in the South Seas, but the difference from before is incredibly large, in quality, luxury and weight. I can carry more water or gear, do more and longer hikes, and get through the day and night much better. In my last hike I almost did not want to go home. No more cheap gear ever again.

  3. I picked up the Big Agnes Tiger Wall tent last year on sale at REI for 300.00 it's worked out well. I just upgraded again to Zpack Duplex to drop some more weight. Both tents are great one is just lighter.

  4. I love Frogg Toggs

  5. The SwissTech puffy jacket from Walmart for $25 meets or exceeds the warmth and quality of those big name brands that cost $$$$$$.

  6. Dude, you can’t stealth camp in that tent that big Agnes tent, it’s yellow and white you’re going to be seen 100 times out of 100 times, do you want something dark green maybe dark blue something in that nature that blends in with your surroundings even brown is great color

  7. EMS Mountain Light 0 has been a rockstar sleeping bag for me for years. I don’t think they make it any more, but petitions are being signed.

  8. frog toggs and duct tape

  9. I've heard great things about paria outdoors for cheap dependable equipement

  10. Frog Toggs are absolute garbage. I’ve grabbed a pair of them twice while in a pinch rainstorm while land surveying. Both times I came away cold and wet wearing the remnants of what was supposed to be a rain suit. I wouldn’t pay even $1 for anything with Frog Toggs written on it.

  11. I got a 4 season 2 person gear top tent for 170.00. I like it. Easy to set up. 5 pounds so a little heavy but not bad.

  12. Dan has got more costume changes than Beyonce.

  13. Hi Dan,

is your Evernew Pasta Pot still your Favorit? I think about to buy one 🙂

    Best regards from Germany

  14. Marmot sponsors the Iditarod…their cheap jackets…its somewhat cheaper because it's not a show novelty or gimmick wear…some stuff thats high priced is actually not good quality..its overated fashion wear…like the ghost whisperer…its like a Rolex expensive watch but not good for survival

  15. Some stuff thats expensive is better..I think OR is up there and worth it etc…but I've seen where people have bought expensive Columbia or North Face and they are that good zipper and stiching quality

  16. Great video. I know it's getting old, but I am in the process of renewing my interest in hiking and camping in the wild, and it was reassuring to see that two of my budget investments, the Lanshan 2 tent and the Osprey Exos backpack are mentioned here. As for sleeping, I prefer a large sleeping bag over a quilt, and went for det Warmpiece Viking 600 as a 3 season bag. I bet it is not better than yours for your preferences, but I guess peoples differing preferences is the reason for the many different products out there. One thing you have said in other videos and that I totally agree with is the fact that you need good sleep, so sacrificing quality for cost should not happen when considering the sleeping system.

A really quick comment about the cooking pot choice: I camp alone for the most part, and first went for a small pot. What I discovered is that a small 0.5 l pot make the total solution more bulky than a larger 1 liter pot. The reason is simple: The larger pot can hold my gas canister. So in this case, more is really less.

  17. Damn. Sleeping bag was the main one I was waiting for

  18. UGQ makes great stuff to be sure, but for me, Hammock Gear quilts (top and under) over UGQ everyday all day.

  19. I can’t stop laughing at you’re wiscansin accent 😂😂.

    Nice jyacket btw😂😂

  20. Everything recommended here is great, love the Pasta POT
